I spend my time researching, imagining, writing, listening, learning, unlearning, and gardening — to design ways of being and becoming that are gentler for people and the earth. Previously, I worked as a writer & editor with rearc institute, an emerging philanthropic initiative realising architectures of planetary well-being; as contributing editor at SPACE10, a research and design lab on a mission to create a better everyday life for people and the planet; and as content editor with Planetary Praxis, an interdisciplinary research group investigating social, digital and environmental justice. Research and reading are central to my practice, as are conversations — with architects, designers, creatives, farmers and troublemakers imagining possible futures shaped by decolonial feminisms, economies of care, radical urbanism, and Indigenous sovereignty. Futures where nature has rights, community is a practice, and the story of how we live is a story of the land and waters. French mannerisms cloaked the city and a new direction was needed. A blend of Modern and traditional Angkor, the new built environment landed Phnom Penh the moniker 'Pearl of the East'. But today only a handful of Molyvann's masterpieces remain, the land beneath them sold out to foreign contractors to build new condos no one wants to live in. The National Olympic Stadium has, so far, survived this erasure of pre-war Khmer identity. Each day, this open public space is frequented by the community as a place to exercise, rest or simply observe. Despite its name, the stadium has never hosted an Olympic Games. household-rituals-cam-chau https://www.linseyrendell.com/household-rituals-cam-chau Fri, 25 Oct 2019 14:22:30 +0000 Linsey Rendell https://www.linseyrendell.com/household-rituals-cam-chau Print Shop 60x 90 Household Rituals, Cẩm Châu Limited EditionEdition of 5 Year 2018 Image Size 60 x 90 cm Household rituals in the neighbourhood of Cẩm Châu in Hội An, where I spent two weeks living with a family. In contrast, the simple waste collection system means general waste is left on the sidewalk in plastic bags, sometimes torn and spilling open. Despite the space (and height) restrictions the architect designated for his Unité d’Habitation social housing models, Corbu’s personal abode sprawled 240 square metres over two storeys. Completed in 1934, his Immeuble Molitor apartment building was a prototype for the Ville Radieuse to come. Two façades were constructed entirely of glass—reinforced glass, glass bricks, clear glass—to form ‘glass curtains’ that would flood the apartment with light. Here, in his studio where he would paint, draw and write, the traditional construction of the concrete, brick and rubble feature wall poetically contrasts to the glass and steel of Corbusier’s Modernist vision. sundown-khan-doun-pehn https://www.linseyrendell.com/sundown-khan-doun-pehn Tue, 12 Nov 2019 22:02:17 +0000 Linsey Rendell https://www.linseyrendell.com/sundown-khan-doun-pehn Print Shop 40x 60 Sundown, Khan Doun Pehn Limited EditionEdition of 10 Year 2018 Image Size 40 x 60 cmIn late 2018, I spent a month in Kampuchea. I found Phnom Penh a physically harsh city of unforgiving sunshine, vast concrete surfaces and choked traffic. It had once been a shimmering metropolis of freedom-fuelled hope and elegance. But that was stripped and beaten bare by the genocide of 1975–79. The city and its resilient people are still recovering. I stayed alongside locals in a 1960s apartment building where life is predominantly lived among the communal walkways of the block's interior. Here, vegetables are chopped on lightwell ledges, children and animals play, and dinner for seven is served from a small charcoal stove. But when the light and heat of the day has faded, the sun-smothered street-side balconies come alive. front-yard-george-town https://www.linseyrendell.com/front-yard-george-town Tue, 12 Nov 2019 22:09:53 +0000 Linsey Rendell https://www.linseyrendell.com/front-yard-george-town Print Shop 40x 60 Front Yard, George Town Limited EditionEdition of 10 Year 2018 Image Size 40 x 60 cmI use the term ‘front yard’ with my best Australian accent. But I was delightfully proven incorrect. I arrived quite late in the afternoon, famished from the day’s adventures exploring fishing villages, farmland and lakes along the bumpy red dirt roads of Kampot province, Kampuchea. The market resides predominantly underneath a patchwork of heavy cloth, metal and timber, creating a dark place to sit and devour squid and crab while hidden from the harsh sunshine. But between this shade and the seaside is a flurry of colour and activity. Female fishers take turns to wade out to their crab traps, dragging them in and depositing them on the market edge, where eager customers swarm the still snapping crustaceans. Within moments, they’re sold out and the next fisher goes to check their trap. swimming-hole-nyons https://www.linseyrendell.com/swimming-hole-nyons Wed, 13 Nov 2019 11:25:58 +0000 Linsey Rendell https://www.linseyrendell.com/swimming-hole-nyons Print Shop 20x 30 Swimming Hole, Nyons Limited EditionEdition of 20 Year 2019 Image Size20 x 30 cmThe local swimming hole in Nyons in the Drôme department of France.

Here, grandmothers sweep the sidewalk of an afternoon once the beating sun has set beyond the tree line. They tidy fallen flower petals and debris from the day, ensuring their home is prim and proper. In contrast, the simple waste collection system means general waste is left on the sidewalk in plastic bags, sometimes torn and spilling open. Recycling has not historically been encouraged and single-use plastic consumption is high. Plastic accounts for 80 percent of waste found on 30 beaches in Việt Nam.

Not because I have a strong Australian drawl. But rather, when I travel, it’s often the differences between simple concepts or structures, between the land I grew up in and the myriad cultures of the world, that I find remarkable. So this is a ‘front yard’ from one particularly colourful and leafy street of George Town, Pinang. In this designated World Heritage site, Buddhism is practised alongside Taoism, Confucianism, Islam and Hinduism, and British colonial buildings adjoin Peranakan shophouses and Indian-Moorish mosques. Multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-faith.
